Which greenhouse is right for your garden? Compare and find out!

Whether you are a novice gardener or a seasoned vegetable grower, Hermie offers greenhouses in all shapes, sizes and price ranges. In this comparison, we list the most important types, features and critical choices side by side, so you can easily choose the right greenhouse for you.

🏡Why have a greenhouse in your garden?

A greenhouse offers you the opportunity to:

  • extend the growing season (start earlier in spring, finish later in autumn)
  • protect sensitive plants from cold, wind and rain better control temperature, humidity and air circulation
  • intensify and expand your vegetable cultivation (e.g. also subtropical crops)
  • create extra atmosphere: a greenhouse can also serve as a garden room or relaxation area

However, choosing the right type of greenhouse and the right materials is crucial to really get the most out of it.

What are the different types of greenhouses?

Glass greenhouses (safety glass):

  • Advantages: Classic look, good light transmission, durable
  • Disadvantages: Higher price, glass can shatter
  • Suited for: seasoned vegetable gardeners

Polycarbonate greenhouses:

  • Advantages: Insulates better than glass
  • Disadvantages: Less classic look, polycarbonate weathers from the sun
  • Suited for: Good balance between price and performance

Tunnel greenhouses:

  • Advantages: Affordable price, easy to install
  • Disadvantages: Wind-sensitive, plastic sheets weather
  • Suited for: Gardeners who want to try a greenhouse

Wall greenhouses:

  • Advantages: Saves space
  • Disadvantages: Limited access, less incidence of light
  • Suited for: Gardens with limited space

Greenhouses with sloping walls:

  • Advantages: Better in windy conditions, better at capturing spring/autumn sun
  • Disadvantages: Complex construction, in general more expensive than type with straight walls
  • Suited for: Gardens with a high wind load / gardeners who want extra solidity

Tip: choosing a greenhouse that is just a little too big gives you room to grow — unused space can later be used as storage, a work area or a relaxation corner.

Important choices: materials & components

The quality of your greenhouse is largely determined by the materials you choose and the accessories you add. Making good choices means less maintenance, longer life and better performance.

Type of glass

  • Safety glass: Safety glass is designed to shatter into thousands of non-sharp pieces when broken. This minimises the risk of injury. Safety glass for a greenhouse is the most expensive option, but it is also the most durable and less likely to break than other options.
  • Polycarbonate: Polycarbonate is light, strong and has excellent insulating properties. The double wall construction creates an insulating layer of air between the panels. This ensures that heat is retained and cold is kept out.

Type of roof

  • Gable roof: The vast majority of greenhouse conservatories have a gable roof. This consists of two sloping sides that meet in the middle, creating a triangle. This shape ensures good water drainage and gives the greenhouse a unique and classy look.
  • Pent roof: Some types have a pent roof. This is a roof that consists of a single sloping side. In a wall greenhouse, the roof starts high up against the wall, allowing rainwater to run off easily. Freestanding models can also have a pent roof.

Wall shape

  • Straight wall: Greenhouses with straight walls are by far the most popular. Most customers find this type of greenhouse the most visually appealing. What's more, a greenhouse with straight walls is the most space-efficient. It takes up less space than a greenhouse with sloping walls and you can make full use of all the space available
  • Sloping wall: Greenhouses with a sloping wall have a larger floor area than their straight-walled counterparts. The sloping walls allow for more light and heat to be captured, which can be particularly useful in early spring. Another advantage is that a greenhouse with sloping walls is more resistant to stormy weather. This is because the wind is guided over the greenhouse, as it were. The structure is also more stable because the pressure from the roof is better distributed. A disadvantage of conservatories with sloping walls is that their shape limits what you can plant where. Tall plants such as tomato plants cannot be planted on the sides.

Essential accessoires

A good greenhouse is more than just a frame and panels. Think of:

  • automatic window openers (temperature-controlled)
  • ventilation windows/skylights for air circulation
  • shade cloths/screens (protection against overheating)
  • watering systems/drip hoses/sprinklers
  • work tables, racks, pots & planters, vertical growing solutions
  • foundations and anchoring (concrete, pillars, self-supporting base)
  • heating, fans, thermostats for seasonal expansion
TIP: Invest in quality accessories from the outset — you will use them more often than you think later on.

Comparison criteria: what to look out for?

When considering two or more conservatories, pay attention to these parameters:
  1. Price per m² & total investment: Note the additional cost for accessories, delivery and installation.
  2. Light transmission & insulation value: How much light comes in, how well does it retain heat?
  3. Strength & wind resistance: Frame construction, anchoring, roof load (snow) — important in windy or mountainous regions.
  4. Functionality/expandability: Can you add ventilation, heating and accessories later?
  5. Aesthetics: Does the style suit your garden/home? Transparency, frame colour, design.

How to choose wisely? Step by step!

  1. Analyse your requirements and space
What do you want to grow? How much space do you have? Do you want to expand immediately?
  2. Determine your budget
Don't just factor in the purchase price, but also accessories and growing materials.
  3. Choose your materials & type
Base your choice on light, insulation, durability and local climatic conditions.
