Choose a high-quality tunnel greenhouse

A high-quality tunnel greenhouse is the ideal choice for the passionate vegetable gardener seeking the space and microclimate of a professional greenhouse, without having to lay a heavy concrete foundation. Whilst cheap arched greenhouses often result in wasted space and a short lifespan, premium tunnel greenhouses (such as the renowned Belgian Filclair greenhouses) offer a professional growing experience. Thanks to unique designs with straight side walls, you can make the most of every square centimetre of ground space and grow your crops in a sea of space. Whether you’re growing tomatoes, cucumbers or heat-loving exotic plants: with the right polytunnel, you can significantly extend the growing season, protect your crops from the rain and enjoy a robust growing environment for years to come. What’s more, a tunnel greenhouse is easy to move. Ideal for crop rotation!!

How do you choose the right tunnel greenhouse?

Not all polytunnels are the same. To avoid a bad buy after the first autumn storm, it’s best to look out for the following structural features when purchasing:

  • Design (straight side walls vs. classic arch): In a traditional tunnel, the curve starts right from the ground. This means you lose growing space and have to bend over constantly. Models such as the Filclair Splendid (3 m wide) and Elegant (4.2 m wide) have side walls that rise vertically for 1.5 to 1.7 metres at the start. The result? You can stand upright throughout and maximise your growing space.
  • Frame and anchoring: Check the tube diameter and rust protection. Top-of-the-range models use 32 mm steel tubes that are hot-dip galvanised both inside and out. As for anchoring: with many greenhouses, you have to bury the plastic sheeting, which is hard work. High-quality tunnel greenhouses are anchored above ground in solid soil or on grass using the heavy-duty ground anchors supplied, which are no less than 60 cm long.
  • The film and the light: The film makes or breaks your tunnel greenhouse. Invest in green, transparent, reinforced PE film (200 microns thick). This professional-grade film will last 7 to 10 years. A major advantage of this specific film is that it provides diffused light. This softens the harsh sun’s rays and prevents your tomatoes or peppers from getting burnt during hot summers.
  • Accessibility (doors): Ventilation is essential. Most premium greenhouses come as standard with two doors for optimal airflow. The Splendid features sturdy hinged doors (with sliding doors as an option), whilst the larger Elegant models come with (double) sliding doors as standard. Sliding doors are highly recommended for gardens that are exposed to strong winds.

Modular, well-designed and multifunctional

A glass greenhouse is beautiful, but a high-quality polythene greenhouse offers solid, practical advantages. You don’t need a foundation, so you can easily assemble it yourself using the assembly instructions provided. What’s more, a premium greenhouse grows with you. Series such as the Splendid and Elegant have a modular design and can easily be extended in length in 1.5-metre increments.

Did you know, by the way, that the structure of these conservatories is so robust that the frame is often purchased without the film? It is then covered with netting or opaque materials and used as a carport, fruit cage or animal enclosure. That is the ultimate proof of a storm-proof structure.

FAQ

  1. What is the advantage of a tunnel greenhouse with straight side walls?
Straight walls (which rise vertically to 1.5 or 1.7 metres) ensure that you can make full use of the greenhouse’s floor space. You don’t have to stay in the centre to stand upright, and your plants can also grow upwards unhindered at the sides.
  2. Do I need to bury the film of a Filclair tunnel greenhouse?
No, that’s a major advantage over many other brands. The film does not need to be buried. Sturdiness is guaranteed by the rock-solid tubular frame and the heavy-duty ground anchors supplied, which are 60 cm deep.
  3. How long does the film on a premium tunnel greenhouse last?
If you opt for the 200-micron-thick, reinforced film (as with Filclair), the average lifespan is 7 to 10 years. Should an accident occur, this reinforced film will not tear any further, meaning any damage remains localised. Once the film has reached the end of its lifespan, replacement film is readily available.
  4. Why is diffused light (green film) better for my plants?
Clear glass allows direct sunlight to pass through, which on hot days can quickly lead to your leaves getting burnt. Reinforced green film creates diffused light. This means the light is distributed softly and evenly throughout the greenhouse. Your plants are less likely to dry out, temperature fluctuations are less extreme, and the risk of scorching is minimal.
  5. Does the frame of a polytunnel rust quickly?
No, provided you opt for professional-grade quality. Our tunnel greenhouses use steel tubes (32 mm) that are hot-dip galvanised on both the inside and outside. This provides years of protection against rust, even in the damp environment of a vegetable garden.
