What should you look out for when choosing a scented candle?

The range of scented candles is vast. To make the right choice, it’s worth bearing the following characteristics in mind:

  • The type of wax: Scented candles are usually made from paraffin, soya wax, beeswax or a blend. Soya wax and beeswax are natural, plant-based alternatives that often burn more cleanly (less soot) and last longer. Paraffin has the advantage of often diffusing the scent very powerfully.
  • Burn time: Check the expected burn time. A larger candle with multiple wicks not only burns more impressively, but also ensures the scent spreads more quickly in larger spaces.
  • Fragrance families: Are you looking to relax? Then opt for floral or herbal scents such as lavender or chamomile. Do you want a boost of energy or to mask odours? Then go for fresh scents such as citrus, eucalyptus or linen. For the colder months, woody or warm scents such as vanilla, amber or sandalwood are very popular.
  • Number of wicks: For a small space (such as the toilet or bathroom), one wick is sufficient. Do you have a spacious living room? Then choose a larger candle with two wicks for optimal ‘scent throw’.

Which scent suits which room?

A scent that smells fantastic in the bathroom might be too overpowering at dinner time. With these practical tips, you can choose the right atmosphere for each room:

  • Living room: This is the place for warm, inviting scents. Think of subtle floral scents in spring and summer, and rich, spicy scents (such as cinnamon, fig or pine) in autumn and winter.
  • BathroomFresh, ‘spa-like’ scents work best here. Eucalyptus, mint, sea salt or bamboo create a clean and invigorating feeling.
  • Bedroom: Opt for calming, subtle aromas that help you relax before bedtime. Lavender and ylang-ylang are excellent choices here.
  • Kitchen: Cooking and baking smells, or the scent of a wet dog after a rain shower? Fresh citrus scents (lemon, bergamot, grapefruit) are masters at neutralising unwanted odours without clashing with the smell of your food.

FAQ

  • How can I prevent my scented candle from ‘tunnelling’?
Tunnelling occurs when a candle is burnt for too short a time, causing only the central part of the wax to melt. The first time you light a new scented candle, always let it burn until the entire top layer of wax has melted (this often takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on the size).
  • What is the maximum time I should leave a scented candle burning?
We recommend not leaving a scented candle burning for more than 4 hours at a time. If the candle burns for too long, the wick may become too long, the candle will produce soot and the glass will become too hot.
  • Do I need to trim the wick of my scented candle?
Yes, this is very important for a clean burn. Trim the wick to about 0.5 centimetres before each use. This prevents an excessively large flame, sooting and smoke.
  • Which scented candles are effective at masking pet odours?
As an animal lover, you’ll no doubt recognise the smell of wet fur or the cat litter tray in the house from time to time. Scents featuring citrus (lemon, orange), lavender or fresh linen aromas work best to neutralise these odours naturally, rather than simply masking them.
  • Is the smoke from a scented candle harmful to my pets?
Pets, especially birds and cats, have more sensitive respiratory tracts than humans. Always ensure there is adequate ventilation in the room where the candle is burning. Preferably choose candles made from 100% natural wax (such as soya wax) and avoid extremely strong chemical fragrances if you place the candle close to where they sleep.
