Buying guide: How do you choose the right outdoor toys?

When creating a play area in the garden, it is important to make thoughtful choices. When making your purchase, consider the following four practical points:

1. The available space in your garden

  • Small city garden or balcony: Choose multifunctional or compact toys, such as a small shell-shaped sandbox or outdoor games that are easy to store after use (such as ring toss or Kubb).
  • Medium-sized to large garden: There is room here for permanent features. Think of a swing set, an inground trampoline or a basketball hoop.

2. Age and development

  • Toddlers and preschoolers (1–4 years): Safety comes first. Sandboxes, low slides and balance bikes are ideal. Choose materials with rounded edges.
  • Children (5–12 years): This group is looking for more challenge. Climbing frames, larger trampolines, sports nets and active games are a perfect match for their energy levels.

3. Choice of material:

  • Plastic: Lightweight, weather-resistant, easy to clean and often available in bright, attractive colours for younger children.

4. Seasonality

Not every toy should stay outdoors all year round. So first consider whether you have enough storage space for items such as playhouses during the winter months. Football goals, trampolines and swings can safely remain outdoors over winter.

  • Playhouses: A place of their own in the garden
A playhouse is the ultimate dream for many children. Our plastic playhouses are extremely popular because they are lightweight, easy to assemble and require virtually no maintenance. They are available in cheerful colours and feature fun details such as windows, doors and sometimes even a small extension. Plastic is resistant to changing weather conditions and is very easy to clean. What's more, this type of playhouse can be relatively easily dismantled or moved to a garage or covered area during the winter months.
  • Trampolines: Bouncing fun for all ages
A trampoline guarantees years of fun, but choosing the right model is important.

Above-ground trampolines: These stand on legs and are easier to move. A safety net is essential here (and often mandatory).

Inground trampolines: These are installed partly or fully in the ground. They are less visually intrusive in the garden and safer to use because the step onto the trampoline is very low or even level with the lawn. When purchasing, also pay attention to the maximum load capacity and the quality of the springs for the best bouncing experience.
  • Football goals and basketball hoops: For active sports enthusiasts
For children who need to burn off some energy, sports equipment in the garden is ideal. Football goals range from lightweight, foldable pop-up versions (handy for small gardens or taking with you) to heavy-duty steel frames that are securely anchored in the lawn for more powerful shots. For basketball hoops, you can choose a separate backboard to attach to a garage wall, or a freestanding basketball hoop with a base that can be filled with water or sand. A major advantage of freestanding hoops is that they are often height-adjustable, allowing them to grow with your child.

FAQ

  1. What is the best way to clean plastic outdoor toys?
Plastic is very easy to maintain. You can simply clean it with a bucket of lukewarm water, a soft sponge and a mild, biodegradable soap. Then rinse it with a garden hose. Avoid aggressive cleaning products to prevent discolouration.
  2. How much free space should I leave around a trampoline?
For safety, we recommend keeping at least 1.5 to 2 metres of free space around the trampoline as a fall zone. Make sure there are no fences, walls, branches or washing lines within this zone.
  3. What is the easiest way to clean a playhouse?
Our low-maintenance playhouses are very easy to clean with a soft brush or sponge, lukewarm water and a mild (biodegradable) soap. Then rinse the playhouse with a garden hose. Do not use scouring pads or aggressive cleaning products, as these can cause scratches and discolouration.
  4. Which football goal is suitable for a small garden?
For a smaller garden or terrace, pop-up football goals or models with a foldable frame are ideal. You can quickly set them up when it is time to play and store them flat in the shed when you need the space again.
  5. What are the advantages of an inground trampoline?
An inground trampoline is much less noticeable in your garden because it is not raised on legs. It is also safer to use because children cannot fall from a height when getting on or off the trampoline.
  6. At what age can children use a playhouse?
Most ground-level playhouses are already suitable and safe for children from around 2 years old. When purchasing, always check the manufacturer's recommended minimum age.
