What cleaning products do you need?
To keep the water quality in your spa or hot tub at its best, you’ll need products from four key categories. We’re happy to help you get started:
- Water balance (To measure is to know)
It all starts with the right water balance. Test the water at least twice a week using test strips or a digital tester. The most important parameters are the pH (acidity) and alkalinity.
pH-Plus & pH-Min: Is the pH level too high or too low? If so, the disinfectants won’t work properly and you may experience skin irritation. These products help you restore the balance. - Disinfection
Warm water is a breeding ground for bacteria. Disinfection is therefore crucial.
Chlorine (tablets or granules): The most popular and effective method for rapid disinfection. - Spa filters
The filter traps skin flakes, sand, leaves and other debris. A clean filter is the heart of your spa.

Troubleshooting spa water issues
Even with proper maintenance, the water can sometimes become unbalanced. These targeted solutions will get you back on track in no time:
- Cloudy or milky water: This often indicates a blocked filter, an imbalance in the pH level or a lack of chlorine. Clean your filter thoroughly and carry out a ‘chlorine shock’ to give the water a good boost. If this doesn’t help, use a flocculant to bind small particles of dirt together so that the filter can trap them.
- Foam on the water: Foam is usually caused by residues of soap, washing-up liquid, body lotion or make-up. The quickest solution is to add a special foam remover. Always ask your guests to have a quick shower before they get into the spa.
- Limescale (rough walls): Do you have hard tap water? If so, limescale may build up on the walls and inside the heating element. Use an anti-limescale agent when filling the hot tub to prevent this and extend the lifespan of your components.

- How often should I change the water in my spa or hot tub?
Under normal use, we recommend completely changing the water every 3 to 4 months. Over time, the chemicals lose their effectiveness and residue builds up in the water (Total Dissolved Solids), making it more difficult to keep the water clear. - What’s the best way to clean a spa filter?
Rinse your spa filter weekly using a garden hose or a special filter comb. We recommend a deep clean once a month: leave the filter to soak overnight in a bucket of water and spa filter cleaner. This will also help dissolve stubborn grease and oils. - What is the ideal pH level for a spa?
The ideal pH level for your spa is always between 7.2 and 7.6. Within this range, your disinfectants (such as chlorine) work most effectively, you prevent limescale build-up, and the water feels gentle on your skin and eyes. - Can I just use swimming pool chlorine in my hot tub?
No, always use spa-specific chlorine. The water in a spa is much warmer (often around 38°C) than swimming pool water. Ordinary swimming pool chlorine dissolves too quickly at these high temperatures and immediately loses its disinfecting effect, or it can damage the spa’s walls. - My spa water smells strongly of chlorine – what should I do?
Paradoxically, a strong smell of chlorine often means there is too little free chlorine in the water, and too much combined chlorine (chloramines, formed after reacting with dirt). You can resolve this by carrying out a chlorine shock treatment (a temporary high dose) or by partially changing the water.
