Growing your own potatoes? Here's how to choose the perfect potato!
Want to grow your own potatoes, but don't know where to start? At Hermie, we have a huge range, and it can be quite overwhelming. No worries! With our handy picker you will discover step by step which potatoes fit perfectly in your (harvest) basket.
1. Floury or firm: what fits your plate?
Do you like a deliciously creamy mash? Then go for floury potatoes! Prefer crispy fries or perfectly roasted potatoes? Then firm-boiling potatoes are your best choice!
2. When do you want to harvest?
We divide our potatoes into early, mid-early and late varieties.
- Early varieties: Planting: Feb/March | Harvesting: after 80-100 days
- Semi-early varieties: Planting: April | Harvesting: after ±100-120 days
- Late varieties: Planting: May | Harvesting: after ±120-150 days
Early varieties give a quicker harvest, allowing you to quickly enjoy your own chips as well as freeing up extra space in your vegetable garden for new vegetables. So you make the most of your vegetable garden! Moreover, the risk of pests and fungi is lower in (early) spring than in summer.
The harvest of earlier varieties is therefore slightly smaller than that of mid-early or late varieties.
Tip from Marcel: combine seed potatoes with various harvest times so that you can enjoy a fresh potato on your plate all season long!
3. Want everything to be organic?
Do you only opt for organic products? Then you're in the right place with us! We have a wide range of organic seed potatoes.
