As soon as the temperatures rise, there’s nothing quite as refreshing as a dip in your own garden. An inflatable family pool offers the perfect balance between the convenience of a pop-up pool and the space of a larger pool. Unlike standard children’s paddling pools, these pools have sturdy, wide walls and are spacious enough for children to play whilst adults can relax in comfort. They can be inflated in a matter of minutes, take up very little storage space in winter, and instantly turn any warm summer’s day into a holiday in your own garden. At Hermie, you’ll find sturdy family pools in various shapes and sizes to suit any outdoor space.

How do you choose the right family swimming pool?

When choosing an inflatable swimming pool for the family, there are a few practical factors to consider. What should you look out for?

  • The shape of the pool: A rectangular family pool is often the most space-efficient option on a patio or neatly mown lawn. Round or square models, on the other hand, create a cosy atmosphere and often feel a bit more spacious when several people are in them.
  • The right dimensions: Measure the space in your garden carefully beforehand. Bear in mind that you’ll need at least half a metre of free space around the pool to get in and out safely, and to catch any splashes.
  • Extra comfort and features: Are you really looking for somewhere to relax? Then opt for a ‘lounge pool’. These family pools are often fitted with built-in inflatable seats, backrests and sometimes even cup holders. Ideal for parents who want to keep an eye on their children or simply enjoy the sun.
  • Pool depth and age: For families with toddlers or pre-schoolers, a pool with a lower entry and two inflatable rings is safer. For older children, the water can be a little deeper, and a pool with three or four rings is a better choice.

Practical use and service life

An inflatable family swimming pool is designed for ease of use. The construction, often consisting of several separate air chambers, provides extra stability. Should a puncture occur in one of the rings, the entire pool will not deflate immediately. Made from sturdy vinyl (often PVC), these pools can last for years with normal use.

To maximise their lifespan, proper preparation is essential. Never place the pool directly on tiles with sharp edges or on a lawn with twigs. A protective groundsheet or special pool tiles prevent leaks at the base. This also makes tidying up much easier: the underside of the pool stays nice and clean.

FAQ

  1. What is the ideal surface for a family swimming pool?
The ideal surface is flat, level and free from sharp objects. Soft grass or a smooth patio is perfect. Always use a groundsheet or foam pool tiles (interlocking mats) to protect the base of the pool and prevent sharp stones from puncturing the vinyl.
  2. How do I keep the water in an inflatable pool clean?
As family pools often do not have a filter pump, manual maintenance is important. Cover the pool with a tarpaulin when not in use to keep leaves and insects out. You should also use a skimmer net to remove surface debris and, if necessary, add a chlorine dispenser with mini chlorine tablets to prevent algae and bacteria.
  3. How long does it take to inflate a family pool?
With an electric air pump or a good double-action hand pump, an average family pool will be fully inflated within 5 to 10 minutes. As most pools have several air chambers, you should inflate them one by one.
  4. Can an inflatable swimming pool damage the grass?
Yes, if a swimming pool is left in the same spot on the grass for several days, the grass underneath will turn yellow due to a lack of sunlight and oxygen. Fortunately, once you remove the pool, the lawn will usually recover on its own after a few weeks or with a bit of reseeding.
  5. How do I empty my family swimming pool?
Most larger family swimming pools are fitted with a handy drain valve at the bottom. You can often connect a garden hose to this, allowing you to drain the water in a controlled manner into a drain or an area of the garden that could do with some extra water (please note: do not do this on plants if the water contains chlorine).
