FAQ saltwater systems

Saltwater systems are great systems that help keep the pool clean & healthy, but are of course a bit technical. They can therefore raise a lot of questions, such as: β€˜What is the difference between a filter pump and a saltwater system?’, β€˜How much salt do I need?’ and so on. In this FAQ, we answer your questions! Dive into the world of saltwater systems with us! πŸ₯½

What does a saltwater system do?

Besides a filter pump, you can also connect a salt water system to keep the pool water clean & healthy. This filter system converts pool salt into natural chlorine to kill algae, fungi and bacteria. So you can enjoy a clean pool, without the use of chemical chlorine. Ideal for kids or water rats sensitive to chemical chlorine! It is the solution for itchy, red eyes and your sensitive skin. So make no mistake, a saltwater system is not completely chlorine-free but provides natural chlorine in the pool.

How does a saltwater system work?

Do not throw any salt into the saltwater system but use special pool salt. You only need to fill the system once as the salt is used over and over again. When you run the system, the salt is converted into natural chlorine thanks to electrolysis. The powerful oxidants released during this electrolysis kill fungi, algae and bacteria.

Even with a saltwater system, it is important to keep a close eye on the pool values. Is there too little chlorine in the water? Then you can run the system more or even add a chlorine shock.

The saltwater system always comes last in the setup around the pool, so the clean water runs directly into the pool. Additional accessories, such as a heat mat, are connected between the filter pump and the saltwater system. So the saltwater system is not a replacement for a filter pump, but an extra addition. Make sure your filter pump is powerful enough for your saltwater system.

Can I replace the filter pump with a saltwater system?

No! A saltwater system is not an alternative to your filter pump but an extra addition to keep the pool water cleaner, without the use of chemical chlorine!

What should I pay attention to when buying a saltwater system?

Make sure the saltwater system is suitable for the number of litres to be cleaned in your pool. The following topic provides a handy overview. In addition, your filter pump must also be powerful enough to drive the saltwater system. This is because the saltwater system depends on the capacity of the filter pump. This also means that the filter pump must run all the time when the saltwater system is on. You can therefore better coordinate the timers of the filter pump and the saltwater system. That's handy!

How much pool salt do I need?

A guideline is to multiply the volume of your pool (the number of litres) by 0.003. Then you will know approximately how many kg of pool salt you need. So for a 25,000 L pool, this is 100 kg.

Won't my pool get too salty with the saltwater system?

No, you are not taking a dip in the salty sea when you choose a saltwater system! The amount of salt per litre in a saltwater system is 10 times less than in seawater.

What should I pay attention to when connecting the saltwater system?

First, it is important that your filter pump is powerful enough to drive the saltwater system! Without a filter pump, your saltwater system will not work. This is because the saltwater system depends on the capacity of the filter pump. This also means that the filter pump must always be running when the saltwater system is on.Β

The saltwater system always comes last in the pool setup. This allows the clean water to flow directly into your pool. Accessories such as a solar mat, heat pump... come between the filter pump and the saltwater system.

Where should I add the salt?

Make no mistake, the salt should not be in the saltwater system itself, but in your pool! Spread the necessary amount of salt for the number of litres on the bottom of the pool. Brush over the bottom with a broom so that the salt is evenly distributed and dissolves faster. Do not put salt in the skimmer as this can lead to clogging!

How long should the saltwater system run?

The number of running hours depends on how many litres of water are in your pool and how warm it is. The warmer and larger, the longer your saltwater system should run. Keep a close eye on the chlorine output. It should be between 0.5 and 1 ppm.

Is there too little chlorine in the water? Then you can increase the running hours of the saltwater system, or even administer a β€˜chlorine shock’ to the water to get the chlorine value back up to par. You can easily measure the pool values with test strips or a reusable meter. What's more, you'll also find out your water's pH, alkalinity & hardness!

Should the filter pump keep running during salt electrolysis?

The filter pump should always run when the salt water system is on. Preferably run the filter pump half an hour earlier & longer than your saltwater system so that it can do its job properly. You can also better coordinate the timers of the filter pump and the saltwater system. That's handy!

What are the different functions on the saltwater system for?

Most Intex saltwater systems have 3 functions on the control panel: timer, boost & self-cleaning. We briefly explain them below:

β€’ Timer: The timer can be set between 1 and 12 hours and will automatically start at the same time every day.

β€’ Boost: The boost can be set to 36, 48 and 60 hours. During the boost, the filter pump should run continuously.

β€’ Self-cleaning: This system reverses the polarity of the electrodes after the set time and thereby cleans the electrodes. It can be set to 14, 10 or 6 hours. Self-cleaning only needs to be set once. It works in the background when the saltwater system is on and produces chlorine. Automatic mode is a 10-hour cycle.

Help, my saltwater system is no longer working properly?

Is your saltwater system no longer flowing properly? Before you think the system is broken and you need to buy a new one, we recommend checking the steps below.
Β

  • Is the saltwater system connected correctly?
Water enters the saltwater system via the left connection, while the water leaves the saltwater system again via the right connection and flows into the pool. Check that these hoses are connected correctly.

  • Is your filter clean?
A lot of dirt naturally remains in the filter. We therefore recommend that you clean the filter often to make it last longer. Change the filter cartridge about every two weeks during the peak season. - Is there sometimes air in the hoses? Perhaps there is an air bubble trapped in the hoses. Turn off the saltwater system and move the hoses for a while so that the air bubble comes out. Then connect the hoses properly!

  • Is the filter pump powerful enough?
Check that your filter pump has the necessary capacity to drive the saltwater system. Perhaps there are too many accessories connected which means your filter pump is not powerful enough?

Is there too much salt in the water?

When the Intex salt water system reads code 92, your water is too salty! Remove some water from the pool and top up with clean water without salt. This way you can get the salt level down again.
