A summer-proof pool in 5 steps? Poolboy Marcel is already standing by with his tips!

Is your pool water cloudy? A clarifier or flocculant will get you back to a clear pool in no time! At Hermie, you'll find a wide range of effective agents that bind small particles of dirt so that your filter can remove them more easily.

What does a clarifier do?

Pool water can become cloudy due to fine particles of dirt such as pollen, sun cream, dust or algae residue. These particles are often too small to be retained by the sand filter pump. A clarifier (also known as a flocculant) agglomerates these fine particles into larger flakes, which the filtration system retains.

The quick result: visibly clear water in just a few hours.

Can be used with sand filter pumps or as flocculant bags

Ideal after intensive use of the pool or in case of green water

When should you use a clarifier?

  • For green pool water: If your pool water is green, algae are probably the culprit
  • For milky pool water: For milky water, check values such as pH and chlorine content. If these values are OK, fine dirt particles or bacteria are probably the cause.
  • When using filter glass in the filter pump: In this case, there are sometimes small dirt particles that are not stopped by the filter glass. You can solve this with a type of maintenance treatment using flocculant.

Suitable for any pool

Whether you have an above-ground pool or a large in-ground pool, we have clarifiers for every situation. Choose from liquid products for automatic dosing or handy floc bags for in the skimmer.

Using a solid flocculant allows you to maintain a constant dosage. Exactly how much you need depends on the weather and the location of the pool. A good guideline is 1 bag or 2 tablets per week for a 50m³ pool. That way you can calculate more easily for your pool.

Combine with a proper water balance

A clarifier works best when combined with a proper pH level and the correct amount of chlorine. Also check out our range of pH regulatorschlorine products and test strips for complete water treatment.

Frequently asked questions about clarifier

How do you use liquid flocculant?

  1. Always check the packaging to find out the correct dosage
  2. Add this amount to a bucket of pool water and mix well
  3. Spread the bucket evenly over the pool and turn on your filter pump
  4. After an hour, switch off the filter pump for about an hour to allow the dirt to accumulate.
  5. After an hour of inactivity, turn the filter pump back on to filter the clumped particles out of the pool. Vacuum up the clumps that have sunk to the bottom with a pool hoover.

How do you use solid flocculant?

Solid flocculant can be in the form of tablets or stocking. You place this flocculant in the skimmer or pre-filter of your filter pump. When the tablet or stocking is completely dissolved, you put in a new one. The agglomerated particles are filtered out of the water using the filter pump. Particles that have collected at the bottom are sucked up with a pool hoover.

Can you swim after flocculant was added?

It is not recommended to swim when flocculant is active in the pool. This is because it can cause itching or skin irritation. Moreover, flocculant needs time to mix with the water and allow dirt to accumulate. Stay out of the water for at least 12 hours. So it's best to add flocculant in the evening.

Can you combine flocculant and anti-algae?

Absolutely. Anti-algae agent kills algae first, but they are often too fine to be stopped by the filter pump. Using flocculant binds the algae together after which they are easier to filter or scoop.
