Old Christmas tree on the ground

Save your Christmas tree from the stake!

Is the festive season really wrapping up for you now? Then don't throw away your Christmas tree just yet - don't do that anyway, it's a waste - but move it to your garden or terrace.

An artificial Christmas tree is easy to dismantle and can be compactly packed so that it will disappear into the attic or the cellar for another few months. Have you opted for the real deal and got yourself a real Christmas tree? Then you can't just store it in a lost corner. There are Christmas tree burnings every year where you can dispose of your specimen, but this is of course a waste of the natural product and also bad for the environment.

We give you some tips to give your Christmas tree a second life!

1. Back to the roots: into the ground!🎄

  • It is obvious, but a Christmas tree that you bought with a root ball or in a pot can also be replanted in your garden. Whether it is successful or not depends on the type of spruce and how well you have cared for it. Has your Christmas tree been sufficiently watered and not left too long and too warm in the house? Then it has a greater chance of success!

  • Don't have a garden but do have a (large) terrace? Then you can plant the Christmas tree in a large pot and place it on the terrace. Potted plants always need more looking after. They need more water than plants in full soil, but you also have to drain the water regularly when it has rained a lot (to prevent the roots from rotting). You also have to protect them during frosty days with, for example, jute sacks or insulation film. This is certainly not an easy task!

  • Before taking the tree outside, it is best to place it in a cold room, such as the garage or garden shed, for a few days so that it can get used to the fresh outdoor temperatures again. Also, never plant your Christmas tree in freezing temperatures, but wait until the weather gets milder.

2. From Christmas tree to feeding tree 🐦

Don't have a place to plant the tree, or did you opt for a cut tree? Then let your tree serve as a food tree for garden birds! Replace the baubles and ornaments with feeders with seeds, suet balls or crunchy peanut bars! 🥜 That way, you'll also serve garden birds a festive meal!

3. Donate the tree to a nursery or second-hand shop 🎄

Is your tree still in good condition but you don't want the hassle of replanting it? Then there are also  nurseries or second-hand shops that will adopt them from you. They will then give the tree a place in the field so that it can continue to grow and be picked up next year by another host family (often at a bargain price for people who are not well off). So be sure to check if there is such an initiative in your neighbourhood.

4. Dry Christmas tree? Free mulch! 🎄

Has your Christmas tree dropped many of its needles? Then it is probably not healthy enough to go into the ground. But not to worry, because it can come in handy in many other ways and forms in the garden. For example, you can make mulch of it! Cut the green branches from the tree, shred them and scatter them over your border. Acid-loving plants, such as the azalea and rhododendron, particularly benefit from this! If you bought a sawn-off Christmas tree, this is also the ideal way to recycle it.
