Newbie in the kitchen garden? Our tips for growing your own tomatoes πŸ…

These blushing fruits come in all sorts of summery colours & sizes. From little taste bombs to real Coeur de Boeufs. No wonder they are so popular with young and old. We give you 5 tips so that even novices in the vegetable garden can grow their own tomatoes successfully! πŸ‘‡

πŸ… Location

Tomatoes are southern creatures and love a sunny and sheltered spot. In your greenhouse they are at their happiest!

πŸ… Space

Make sure the plants have enough room to grow & bloom. This will also reduce the chance of the tomato plague brewing. Another important tip is to regularly ventilate the greenhouse. A screen door is very handy for this. This also prevents neighbourhood cats from coming into your conservatory to sunbathe and churn up the soil.

πŸ… Support

The branches of tomato plants bear a lot of fruit. This creates a lot of weight, so gracefully guide your plants around tomato spirals or attach the branches to the top of your greenhouse with clips for extra support.

πŸ… Remove axillary shoots

If you let the plants do their thing, your greenhouse will turn into a real jungle in no time. The plant does not put enough energy in developing fruits but in the many leaves that grow there. This means your fruit will not get enough sunlight to ripen and the chance of fungal diseases increases. So be sure to check the plants weekly for these offshoots!

 πŸ… Fertilise

Besides lots of love & sunlight, tomato plants also need fertiliser. Tomato fertiliser has a high potassium content & ensures juicy and healthy fruit.
