Planting shallots, onions and garlic? Start with the best seed potatoes!
Growing your own onions, shallots or garlic is easy and delicious. With the right seed potatoes you can be sure that your plants will get off to a good start and produce a good harvest. Whether you go for yellow, red or white onions or opt for shallots and garlic with lots of flavour, you will find the best varieties with us!
When can I plant these seedlings?
You can plant shallots, onions and garlic in spring or in autumn.
Are you growing in autumn? Then choose winter varieties. These are available from mid-September and can be harvested as early as May/June. Moreover, the yield is often higher. Just make sure your plot is not too wet!
Planting in spring? Then you can harvest in late July/August when the foliage falls flat and more than half has dried out.
What should I pay attention to when planting?
• Planting location
Choose a sunny spot where there is also a little draught. That wind will ensure that the seedlings dry nicely and moulds have less chance!
• Weeding
Weed the weeds regularly, but don't hoe! This can cause onion flies to pick up the scent!
• Fertilise
Use a potassium-rich fertiliser to grow large, firm & tasty fruits. Moreover, fertiliser also improves the shelf life of your onions, shallots & garlic!
Leave that fresh farmyard manure or semi-digested compost to one side, as flies will pick up on these too!
