Buying a glass greenhouse: horticultural glass or safety glass?

Both ACD greenhouses and Vitavia greenhouses are fitted with safety glass. Until recently there were Vitavia greenhouses with horticultural glass, but is not common anymore. Therefore, we decided to no longer offer this opportunity. Both types of greenhouse glass have their advantages and disadvantages. Here's an overview. 

Horticultural glass has the great advantage of letting in up to 90% of the sunlight. What's more, it's very easy to install. So it's easier and more effective than a film tunnel. Replacing torn or broken film is not so simple. Installing new glass in a glass conservatory is much easier.

Another advantage of greenhouse glass over film greenhouse tunnels is that the light is better distributed. With a film greenhouse tunnel, you risk burning your greenhouse plants because the light is centralised. Horticultural glass in your greenhouse provides good thermal insulation and blocks out harmful UV rays. 

Safety glass is also known as toughened glass, which is explained by the way it is manufactured. Conservatory safety glass undergoes a heat treatment followed immediately by a rapid cooling process. This makes it 7 times harder than standard horticultural glass. What's more, if the glass is broken, it shatters into thousands of blunt pieces. So in terms of safety, it performs much better than standard glass.

Safety glass is 7 times harder than ordinary horticultural glass, so the risk of breakage on impact is minimal. Hail, the weight of snow in winter, children playing football, flying materials during a storm... A conservatory made of safety glass can withstand anything! Safety glass for conservatories is extremely durable. It lasts a very long time and is highly resistant to scratches. It doesn't fade in direct sunlight and is resistant to all kinds of cleaning products. It also has good insulating properties.

The ACD greenhouses in the Prestige range are equipped with a hammered safety glass roof. This technology refracts sunlight to reduce the risk of burning your plants. The light is diffused optimally, so that all the plants in the greenhouse can benefit. Another advantage of hammered glass is that condensation runs off nicely instead of dripping.
