A spa without chlorine? It can be done! 🫧
Do you also suffer from itchy eyes or irritated skin after bubbling in your spa? Chances are chlorine is the culprit! While chlorine is an important means of keeping your spa clean and free of bacteria, it can cause all kinds of discomfort for people with sensitive skin or allergies. Fortunately, chlorine-free alternatives exist today, so you can simply enjoy a sparkling clean spa - without the nasty side effects.
We have put together a practical step-by-step plan for you with our favourite tips and products, which we have tested thoroughly ourselves (because we too love a delicious bubble!). So you can be sure you can count on honest and reliable advice.
1. Ensure the perfect pH level
The correct pH level is essential for comfortable and safe spa water. Ideally, it should be between 7.2 and 7.6. To control this, use products to raise or lower the pH level. This keeps the water balanced and prevents skin and eye irritation.
2. Check the alkalinity
The alkalinity ensures that the pH value remains stable. The ideal range is between 80 and 150 ppm (parts per million). Too low an alkalinity can lead to unstable pH and corrosion, while too high an alkalinity causes scaling and cloudy water. Use an alkalinity-boosting product, such as Alkalinity up, to maintain this
Tip: test your water regularly!
To fully enjoy your hot tub, it is important to test your water at least once a week with handy test strips. This way you keep pH, alkalinity and clarity in balance and prevent irritations.
3. Poolsan: the star of the show
Want to get rid of chlorine altogether? Then Poolsan Zero Chlorine is your new best friend. This chlorine-free maintenance product keeps your spa clean and clear, without the typical chlorine smell and irritation. Poolsan is also suitable for swimming pools and ideal for people with chlorine allergies. How does it work?
Poolsan acts as a flocculant: it binds organic dirt such as sunscreen and skin oil, making it easier to filter out of the water. Use it about once every fortnight for best results.
Switching from chlorine to chlorine-free? No problem!
If you used chlorine before, you can simply switch to Poolsan and other chlorine-free products using the same water. Do test your water values regularly to keep everything under control.
4. Use a flocculant
Like Poolsan, a flocculant helps small dirt particles clump together, causing them to sink to the bottom of your spa. This makes cleaning up a lot easier: scoop away the dirt with a net or vacuum it up with a spa hoover.
5. Clear the water with Clearswim
Oil, soap scum and sunscreen can make your spa water cloudy. With a product such as Clearswim or other water-clearing products, you can clear the water to make your spa look inviting and fresh again. With these tips, you will soon enjoy a wonderful chlorine-free spa experience - without itchy eyes or irritated skin.
