5 tips for using rat and mouse poison
During autumn, mice and rats once again find their way inside to hide during the coming winter months. In our article "How to control rats and mice" we already suggested several control methods. In this article we will take a closer look at the correct use of mouse and rat poison. Because there are some points of attention when using poison.
🐭 Choose the right place
Rats and mice mainly walk along the walls, so it is a good idea to put the poison there as well and not in the middle of the room. In this way, the rodents will regularly come across the poison during their daily route, and will eat more of it.
🐭 There is a smell to it
Do not touch the poison with your bare hands during unpacking. Your body odour can affect the smell of the poison and the mice will not eat it. Always use a glove. To make the poison even more attractive, you can put some wet dog food next to it. The mice will be attracted by the smell.
🐭 Leave the poison bags closed
Leave the poison in the pre-packed bag. Do not scatter the grains around or push the paste out. This is even dangerous because in this way the poison can easily spread through the house or garden. The mice and rats will eat through the bags.
🐭 Change of food makes you eat
Mice and rats are clever animals. It is therefore important to regularly use
different methods of control. And certainly different types of poison made up of different substances. Are you giving the mice the same poison every time? Then they will become resistant to it.
🐭 Be patient
With a small pack of poison you will only be able to exterminate a few mice. Do you have a whole family under your roof? Then you'll have to persevere, and one box of poison will not suffice. The mice that remain alive can reproduce, so it will take some time to get rid of them all.
Check regularly whether there is any poison left in the feeding boxes, and keep adding poison until all the mice have disappeared.
Safety first!
-
Rat poison is easy to obtain and use. It is often handled carelessly, causing problems later. Always make sure that there are no children or (domestic) animals to avoid drama. That is why we always recommend the use of a secure feeding box. Here you can put the poison bags in the trays, or put the cubes on the skewer that comes with it. With the key, you can easily open the box to refill and close it again. There are two holes in the box so that mice and rats can easily reach the poison, but larger animals (or children) cannot.
- Are you putting the poison outside your house? Then always take into account possible neighbouring animals. Has another animal unintentionally eaten it? Then consult a vet immediately. In the best case, the animal will be a bit sick or weak but in the worst case it might even die. So always think about this!
- Have you already killed a few mice or rats? Then first roll them up in a plastic bag before throwing them in the rubbish bin. Never leave the poisoned rodents outside, because if other animals come and eat them, they will also ingest the poison.
