6 easy-care houseplants

Houseplants have become increasingly popular in recent years. No wonder: they bring life to your interior, purify the air and come in all sizes and colours. However, not everyone is blessed with a green thumb, which means that some plants end up looking rather dull after a while. We list our favourite (and low-maintenance!) houseplants with some care tips.

Finding plants that require little maintenance is the first important point when picking out the perfect houseplant. But it is also important that the plants are fresh and in good condition when you buy them. Our houseplants come straight from the flower auction in Aalsmeer. There they are firmly packed. After being packed, they are sent immediately so that you can give them a nice spot in your house within 48 hours after ordering.

Our favourites:

🌵 Aloe vera

We kick off our list with the Aloe vera. This ancient plant originates from the Arabian Peninsula. Because the plant had to survive in the desert, it hardly needs any water. The Aloe vera plant is also self-healing, so it couldn't be easier. Is the leaf damaged? Then the wound closes itself due to the healing substances in the aloe juice. That juice also has a healing effect on humans, for example it relieves burns. That is why most after-sun products also contain aloe vera. This plant can purify up to 80% of the harmful chemicals in the home.

🌵 Coffea Arabica of coffee plant

Would you like to enjoy a subtle coffee aroma in your home throughout the day? Then we can recommend the Coffea Arabica or coffee plant. It originates from Ethiopia but can also survive in the Belgian living room. It is best to place it in a light spot but not in the full sun. Give it enough water during the spring and summer months. It is better to give it a small amount a few times than a lot of water at once. In Belgium we do not have a tropical climate, so you should not expect kilos of coffee beans. After a few years, small white flowers that smell like jasmine will appear.

🌵 Sansevieria or mother-in-law's tongue

In recent years, the Sansevieria or mother-in-law's tongue has no longer been linked to grandma's living room or the village pub. This plant has become immensely popular because it is almost indestructible and gives a retro look to any interior. The Sansevieria is one of the few houseplants that does not need much light. The rule with this plant is: better too little water than too much. You only need to water it when the soil starts to dry out. Although the plant is a great air purifier, it is toxic to humans and animals. The Mikado variety has a playful zebra pattern.

🌵 Rhapis Excelsa or lady palm

Looking for a real eye-catcher for your interior? Then you can choose the exotic-looking Rhapis Excelsa or lady palm. It requires a little more care than the other plants on this list, but it will be worth it. To give your hollyhock a boost of growth, it is best to place it in a light spot. But it will also do well in a shady spot. The hollyhock is a greedy plant when it comes to water. So make sure there is a sufficient supply of lukewarm water in the pot. In the summer, you should give it twice as much water as in the winter.

🌵 Senecio Rowleyanus or string-of-pearls

Create your own urban jungle by bringing a few hanging plants into your home. Let their leaves whirl gracefully down on your cupboard, or mix and match some brightly coloured hanging pots on the wall for a nonchalant look. Our favourite is the string-of-pearls (Senecio Rowleyanus). This plant gets its name from its beautiful and shiny bead-like leaves. In England, the plant is also called the String of Pearls. The pea plant needs little care. In spring and summer you only have to water it weekly, and in winter you hardly have to worry about it. Do make sure the plant is sheltered from draught. Please note that this plant is poisonous, so pets and small children are best kept away.

🌵 Spathiphyllum of peace lily

To complete the list: the Spathiphyllum or peace lily. You can recognise it by its spoon-shaped leaves and elegant white flowers. The Spoon plant loves a light spot but does not like it too hot in the full sun. The plant will not die from drowning as it needs quite a lot of water. Keep the soil moist by regularly giving it a small amount of lukewarm water. If the plant gets too little water, it will immediately show this by hanging its leaves. Refresh the plant from time to time with a spray of water, but try to avoid the flowers so that they do not turn yellow. Remove the flowers as soon as they have finished flowering.

🌵 Not in our list but also a plus for your interior: the chinese money plant (Peperomiodes) and cathedral cactus (Euphorbia cactus).

🌵 Don't have much room but would like to give your dorm or office a green element? Then choose air-purifying plants. These do not only look nice but their purifying effect also improves concentration and productivity. Enough reasons to convince your (dorm) boss. Or place a few houseplants in your bathroom to turn it into a tropical paradise. This way it seems as if you are taking a shower in the open air. A holiday feeling in your own home! Make sure that the plants can withstand high humidity.
