Tagetes – marigolds
Tagetes (marigolds) are widely used to control nematodes and to promote nitrogen production. Pratylenchus penetrans is a free-living root-lesion nematode. If the soil is severely infested with this nematode, many crops—such as carrots, lettuce, endive, cucumbers, leeks, shallots, celery, endives, and strawberries, suffer severe damage, resulting in lower yields and reduced quality of the harvested product. These nematodes also exacerbate the damage that fungi can cause.
Leave the crop in place for at least 3 months to achieve sufficient effect. After the first heavy night frost, this annual crop dies off and can be mowed and tilled into the soil.
