This kit is ideal for urban gardenerswithout a garden, or for beginners who are still finding their footing. Thanks to this box, growing your own delicious chicory is so easy that you don’t even need a green thumb. And you don’t need much patience either, because you can enjoy fresh chicory heads on your plate in just 3 to 4 weeks.

What’s in the box?
• growing tray with soil
• 10–15 chilled chicory roots

How does it work?
• Step 1: Pour a little water into the tray every day. The chicory roots will absorb the water on their own. Make sure the tray always contains a thin layer of water so the roots get enough moisture.
• Step 2: Placethe box on top of the chicory roots to block out light. Chicory prefers to grow in the dark to maintain its beautiful white-gold color. Do not press down on the box to prevent damage to the chicory heads.
• Step 3: Place the box in a room with a temperature between 18 and 22 degrees. After about 3–4 weeks, the chicory heads will be ready to harvest. Enjoy!

FAQ

• Why are the chicory roots cut off?
It’s simple: so they’ll be the same height, making them easier to serve. This way, you’ll also be able to harvest more uniform heads.

• The chicory roots I received are smaller than expected?
Did you buy the chicory cuttings at the start of the season? If so, this is completely normal! Often, the first chicory roots are still a bit smaller (due to the dry summer). Don’t worry—a small root can produce a head just as beautiful as one from a larger root!

• My chicory roots aren’t forming nice heads, but are falling apart? 
Of course you want to grow beautiful, tight heads, but what if your heads just fall apart? This can have several causes:

👉Too much light! Yes, even in a covered chicory forcing tray, light can still get in if you place the tray in direct sunlight. So choose the spot where you place your forcing tray or covered bucket wisely! 

👉Too hot! Not only does direct sunlight let light into your growing container, but it also causes the temperature to skyrocket. This makes it warmer inside the container than the ambient temperature, preventing your chicory from forming nice heads. 

• How many times can I harvest from the same chicory stalks? 
You’ll harvest 1 head per chicory root. After cutting off the head, a few loose leaves may still grow. These are delicious in your salad!
