Rue - pot ø10.5 cm (Ruta graveolens)
Wijnruit
Product information "Rue - pot ø10.5 cm (Ruta graveolens)"
This plant is native to southern Europe, around the Mediterranean, where it grows wild. Grapefruit is a striking plant in the garden because of its attractive compound grayish blue-green leaves. The plant grows to a height of about 60 to 75 cm and in summer it bears bright yellow flowers. It is also characterized by a rather strong, unpleasant odor, which is why the plant was once planted to keep cats at bay. Vine shoots are also often planted as decorative plants in borders
CULTIVATION TIPS:
Grapevine can be planted as a separate plant in an herb or perennial border, but a row, as a dividing hedge, in the herb garden can look very decorative. The shrub likes a poor well-drained soil in full sun and requires little care. Make sure there is enough space: planting distance 30 x 40 cm. Do not be afraid to shorten the plant in the spring with the hedge trimmer. In this way you can promote the production of new, colorful leaves and a more compact growth. In a herb garden, rue can have a bad influence on certain herbs growing in the immediate vicinity, especially basil.
CULINARY:
As a kitchen herb, use in moderation, as the flavor is very strong. One can chop vine leaves and add them in moderation to salads or sauces to give them a bitter taste. You may also find rue in recipes with cheese and egg dishes. Be careful with rue: some people are allergic to it. Touching the leaves and especially plant sap can cause skin irritation, especially in full sun.
MEDICINAL:
In the past, this herb was used against high blood pressure, headaches, toothaches or rheumatic pains. It strengthens the bones and teeth. Today, although there are still uses of rue in homeopathy, it is mainly grown as an ornamental plant.
