Winterise the pond in 4 steps
Give the pond a good maintenance in the autumn so that you can enjoy the beautiful fauna and flora in the water in the spring. During autumn there are a number of points of interest such as the swirling leaves that pollute your pond. But hungry herons are also on the lookout, in search of a tasty fish.
1. Time for the big clean! 🧹
In autumn, a great deal of organic waste, such as fallen leaves and dead plant matter, can float around in the pond. This waste can pollute the bottom and promote algae growth. So it's time to take care of the pond with a scoop net or stretch a fine mesh net over the pond.
2. Herons lurking 🐟
A net is not only useful for catching branches and leaves, but also keeps hungry herons at bay. Fish hibernate at 6°C and are therefore an easy prey. By fencing off your pond, the herons fish behind the net (or not 😉 )!
3. Adjusted food 🥫
As the fish go into winter mode, they use much less energy and you need to feed them less. It is also advisable to switch to adapted winter food.
4. Keep the pond free of ice 🧊
During the winter months it is important not to let the pond freeze over. When an ice layer forms on the pond, excess CO2 cannot escape and the acidity level rises. Is it still icy cold and the pond is partly frozen, or is there snow? Remove the snow with a broom because fish and aquatic plants also need sufficient light during the winter months.
