What is polycarbonate?
Polycarbonate is an good alternative to glass. Polycarbonate is a plastic, but externally it differs only slightly from glass. Like real glass, it insulates well and even gives extra heat. Polycarbonate sheets are formed using 2 sheets separated by a layer of air. This reduces energy losses.
Polycarbonate is very light, which already makes installing the greenhouse a lot less difficult. A possible disadvantage of the limited weight is encountered in strong winds. This is because it increases the likelihood of the sheets being blown out of the frame in stormy winds.
One disadvantage of a polycarbonate greenhouse is that the material does not let through as much light as glass. Depending on the exact composition, about 79% to 83% light is transmitted. However, this also brings an advantage. The lower light transmission produces diffused light, which prevents burning of plants.
The main disadvantage of polycarbonate is its lower durability compared to glass. A glass greenhouse can still look like new even after 25 years - given the right care. Polycarbonate is and remains a plastic and is therefore by definition more sensitive to weather conditions. UV rays, (acid) rain and strong winds cause the material to weather over time, which also does not improve light transmission. In other words, polycarbonate sheets will require quicker replacement than glass sheets.
Furnish your polycarbonate greenhouse to your size
Choosing the frame and opting for safety glass, horticultural glass or polycarbonate is really only half the battle.
An automatic window opener ensures that your plants do not overheat in summer without you having to keep an eye on them. Adequate ventilation also prevents fungi and pests in the greenhouse. Two birds with one stone.
In summer, an extra shade cloth can also come in handy to prevent your plants from burning, while tomato spirals give your tomato plants the support they need, as without extra support they could break under their own weight.
Other useful accessories include a folding shelf for use as a worktable, a water drip kit, a water tank with drip system or an electric heater.
