What are pheromones and how do they work?

Pheromones are natural scent substances that insects use to communicate with each other. By mimicking these substances, pheromone traps lure specific insect species into the trap without harming other beneficial insects. This makes them a safe choice for both your garden and the environment. In a pheromone trap, a pheromone is hung that gives off the scent of the female moth. Depending on which pheromone you hang and therefore which scent is spread, you will catch male moths of that species. The males are literally lured into the trap.

As males are captured, they can no longer fertilise females. Less fertilisation naturally leads to fewer eggs and the result is fewer harmful caterpillars.

Note that a pheromone trap works species-specifically. With a pheromone trap for the chestnut moth, you will not be able to catch a boxwood moth or vice versa.

There are a number of types of pheromone traps:

Delta trap: Triangular 'tent' for hanging. Inside the tent are adhesive plates.
Funnel trap: Often transparent funnel to catch moths. The pheromone spreads through an opening under the lid. For some moths, fill the funnel partly with water.
