Unknown but not unloved Vietnamese coriander
Vietnamese coriander is still a relatively unknown spice in Belgian cuisine, but we would like to change that!
Spicy, with a hint of mint
This perennial herb may bear the name coriander, but it looks completely different from the standard kitchen herb that we know. In fact, it is not related to coriander at all, but belongs to the Persicaria family. Its narrow and long leaves have a dark pattern that immediately catches the eye. Its taste is similar to traditional coriander, but a little spicier, with a hint of mint. During summer, small pastel-coloured flowers appear on the plant.
The leaves can be used in oriental dishes such as spring rolls, Vietnamese soup or noodle salad.
Location
Vietnamese coriander comes from a tropical climate and likes it warm. So choose a sunny spot and water the plant regularly. Bring it into your house during very cold nights and the winter.
