Transform your seeds into seedlings
If you like to grow your own plants, using propagators or (heated) indoor greenhouses can make a big difference in your success. These handy covered containers create an ideal environment for the growth of seeds, cuttings and young plants by providing a stable temperature and humidity.
Propagators or heated indoor greenhouses are particularly useful in the growing process as they offer a number of advantages, including:
There are different types of propagators available, each with their own characteristics and applications. Below, we discuss the most common ones:
- Increased germination rate: by providing a warm and humid environment, a propagator will significantly increase the germination rate of your seeds;
- Faster growth: the warmth of propagators stimulates the growth of both seeds and young plants, significantly reducing your growing time;
- Protection from elements: propagators provide a sheltered environment that protects young plants against adverse weather conditions and pests.
There are different types of propagators available, each with their own characteristics and applications. Below, we discuss the most common ones:
- Heated propagators: this type of propagator has a built-in heating element to provide a constant temperature, which is ideal for growing heat-loving plants;
- Cold propagators: these propagators do not have a heating element, but still provide a protected environment for young plants and seeds. These propagators often come with a growing medium such as coco, which retains water and protects your plant's delicate roots;
- Mini propagators: these are small propagators suitable for growing single plants or for use in small spaces. They are mostly placed on the windowsill, albeit out of reach of direct sunlight.
Tips from Marcel:
"How to get the most out of your propagator!"
- Place the propagator on a flat and stable surface;
- Make sure the propagator is set to the right temperature for the plants you want to grow;
- Ensure adequate ventilation to prevent the plants from getting too humid;
- Keep the propagator thoroughly clean to avoid mould and bacteria;
- Keep the propagator away from direct sunlight to avoid overheating.
