Stand up and shine: how plant supports and binding materials make your plants shine!
Plant supports and binding materials are essential tools for any gardener who wants to keep their plants healthy and strong. Whether supporting large, heavy-fruited plants or directing creeping vines, the correct use of these tools can mean the difference between a lush garden and a chaotic jungle. In this blog post we will discuss the different types of plant supports and binding materials that are part of our range.
What are plant supports?
Plant supports are structures that you can use to support your plants and prevent them from falling or breaking under their own weight. They are often used for tall plants such as tomatoes, beans and sunflowers, but can also be used for vines and other vegetables and flowers. We offer many types of plant supports.
Plant canes
We mainly offer plant supports made of bamboo. Bamboo canes are generally cheap and readily available. In addition, bamboo canes are more environmentally friendly than wooden canes, as the mother plant is not lost when harvested and therefore continues to absorb CO2. Over time, these canes start to lose their natural colour, but you can avoid this by varnishing them from time to time.
In addition, we are strong proponents of plastic-coated metal planting sticks. They are very strong and in principle cannot break. In addition, they do not rust and can therefore be left outside all year round. With their dark green colour, these planting sticks fit in perfectly with your garden.
Furthermore, we also offer galvanised tomato support spirals. They ensure that your tomato plant will not bend or break under the weight of all those big tomatoes.
Support rings
Our support rings offer extra support to plants that tend to open up. With a support ring you can group and guide the flowering plant. You attach the support ring to a plant cane and move it as the plant grows. Our support rings are made of steel or plastic and do not rust! These products can therefore be left outside all year round.
Climbing supports
In small gardens, it can be particularly useful to create climbing supports, as they make the best use of the garden space. What is even more interesting is that the fruits do not get in each other's way and are better exposed to the sun, which often results in better quality fruit. In addition, you can break up a long, boring wall in the garden in a pleasant way by using our decorative climbing plant supports. Why use binding equipment?
Tying material is important for the health of plants. It provides support for plants that would otherwise fall or break under the weight of their flowers, fruit or branches. In addition, tying material can also help to keep plants in the desired shape and stimulate their growth.
The most common binding materials are :
- Binding wire: this is a very flexible wire that can be easily formed and used to tie branches and stems to a support. It is available in different thicknesses and can be made of metal or plastic.
- Binding tape: this is a flexible, wide strip used to bind plants. In addition, our binding tapes often have a practical rat-tail closure. It is available in different lengths and is usually made of plastic.
- Rope: this is a versatile tying material that can be used to tie plants to a support or to hold different parts of a plant together. It is available in different lengths and is often made from natural materials such as raffia, sisal, coir and jute.
Tips from Marcel :
"Here's how to get the most out of your binding equipment!"
- Do not tie the plants too tightly to avoid stunting growth or damaging the stems.
- Always use soft binding material to avoid damaging the plants.
- Tie up the plants in time to prevent them from falling or breaking.
- Regularly check that the binding material is neither too tight nor too loose and adjust it if necessary.
