This is how to enjoy a chlorine-free pool!
1. Poolsan
The first thing you can do is simply replace your chlorine with BSI Poolsan. This product is just as effective as chlorine, but odourless, does not sting and is safe for your plants and lawn. Poolsan is specially designed for people with chlorine allergies who still like to swim laps. It has a flocculating effect that helps filter out organic dirt, such as sunscreen.
2. Mini pool
For a splash pool without a filter pump, use BSI Mini pool. Ideal for little ones and there is no chlorine involved!
3. Saltwater system
Another topper is a saltwater system. Contrary to what some people think, it is not a replacement for your filter pump, but an extra addition to your pool setup. You place the saltwater system between the filter pump and the pool. It is therefore important that your filter pump has sufficient capacity to drive the saltwater system. Always check this before buying an electrolysis system!
How does such a salt water system work?
This filtration system converts pool salt into natural chlorine so that algae & bacteria are killed. The chlorine concentration is lower and more evenly distributed than with traditional chlorination. So you enjoy a clean pool without harsh chemicals. You read it right: so chlorine does come into play, but not the chemical variety that causes irritation or an intrusive smell!
How do you use a saltwater system?
Fill the pump with pool salt and run the system. Electrolysis converts the salt into natural chlorine, releasing powerful oxidants that kill algae, fungi and bacteria. The pool salt only needs to be added once, as it is continuously reused.Regular monitoring of salt levels is essential. This can be done easily with test strips that you hold in the water for a few seconds.
- Not enough salt? The electrolysis is not working properly, resulting in insufficient water disinfection.
- Too much salt? This can damage pool equipment and still cause irritation.
It is also important to maintain pH and alkalinity levels to ensure the system functions optimally.

4. A biopool
Have you never heard of a biopool? It is the golden mean between a swimming pond and a swimming pool. With a biological pool, no chemicals are used to keep the pool clean, but the water is filtered based on hydrolysis. Hydrolysis splits water molecules, releasing ions with a disinfecting effect. This prevents the growth of algae.
Sounds all very nice and it is, but such a biopool also requires more maintenance than a traditional pool. Moreover, it is only possible to choose a biopool as a built-in pool. So this results in a higher price tag and is not an option for those who only want an inflatable splash pool in the garden during the summer months.
