Overseeding in winter, a beautiful and weed-free lawn in spring
When the first rays of sunshine break through the clouds in spring, most hobby gardeners start thinking about their lawns. The lawnmower comes out again after a long winter in the garden shed, and the bags of fertiliser and grass seed are brought out. Usually, the weeds have already started to grow. So overseeding the lawn during the winter months is ideal for enjoying a full and weed-free lawn in the spring.
🌱 SOS-technology
Barenbrug's recovery lawn mixture, with its
SOS (Super Over Seeding) technology, is the grass seed to give your lawn a boost during the winter. This grass seed is for many (international) sports clubs the means to give the lawn a new lease of life during winter break. The recovery grass germinates and establishes itself in a short period of time and already at temperatures from 5°C. SOS is the only grass mixture available that germinates and grows so quickly at such low soil temperatures. But even at colder and frost-free temperatures, this grass seed will continue to germinate, albeit at a slower rate. Not only is overseeding in winter a godsend for sports clubs, it also offers many advantages for gardeners.
""But why should I overseed during the winter?"" Your lawn may not be visited by 11-man football teams every week, but
many lawns could use a boost after a dry summer. A dense lawn is not only a pretty sight but you will also have to go into the garden less often to weed it. Because of the European ban on selective weed killers for private use, it has become even more important to keep your lawn well-stocked, without any bare spots. Because the more bare spots, the more weed growth.
🌿 Off with street grass!
The greatest advantage of overseeding in winter is that
weeds and street grasses have less chance to establish themselves in the lawn. All bare spots are potential breeding grounds for weeds and street grass (seeds are transferred by birds flying over). On the one hand, SOS ensures a full lawn with deep roots in the short term. And the fuller your lawn, the less room for the weeds.
On the other hand
SOS grass seed (5°C) germinates at lower temperatures than street grass (8-10°C). So you are too fast (and too smart!) for them!
An additional advantage is that you can enjoy a beautiful green appearance early in the year. But what is the secret of this recovery grass seed? Westerwold ryegrass! This type of grass establishes itself 18 days earlier than the well-known ryegrass found in many regular mixtures. Within two weeks of sowing, you will already see a good result!
With this grass seed
you can only fill in bare spots. To sow a completely new lawn, you will have to wait until spring arrives and temperatures rise.
