The benefits of peat-free potting soil!

That a good potting soil is essential for your plants, you probably already knew! Quality potting soil ensures a healthy start and contains perlite - those recognisable white grains - that keep the soil airy. In addition, potting soil provides starter nutrients, allowing your plants to grow and flower well for several months.

Harmful to the environment

What you might not know is that regular potting soil often contains peat. Peat makes the soil airy and holds water well, but its extraction involves major environmental problems, namely the destruction of peatlands.

Peatlands are crucial for biodiversity and absorb a lot of CO₂. This is good for air purification, but when peat is excavated, this stored CO₂ is released again. So less good news for nature!

Go for peat-free potting soil

Fortunately, there are more and more (organic) peat-free alternatives. Potting soil based on coconut fibres, wood fibres, compost or other renewable materials offers the same airy and nutrient-rich basis for your plants - without damaging the environment. So a small adjustment for a healthier planet!

Tip from Marcel

Do you also always coat your potted plants with hydro grains? Then choose pumice grains from now on. They absorb water just as well as hydro grains, but their production emits 96% less CO₂ than regular hydro grains!
