Endive is best sown in June or July in a seedbed in the open ground, to be transplanted after pricking out. It is also perfectly possible to sow the seed pods immediately in rows and thin out if necessary. For an early harvest, sow as early as March or April under glass with a soil temperature of 14/16ºC. After pricking out, the plant can be transplanted under glass. Seedlings can make sowing easier, but be sure to keep them sufficiently moist after sowing. So in dry weather, it is important to water regularly.
