Product information "White cabbage - set of 5 pieces"
White cabbage is by nature a biennial crop, forming the 'cabbage' in the first year and flowering in the second year. It is a so-called head cabbage that is closely related to other head cabbages such as red cabbage, pointed cabbage and savoy cabbage. The edible part, the 'cabbage', is actually an end bud consisting of many stiffly growing, overlapping leaves that form a closed head. The color is not really white but light green. The leaves have a kind of wax layer that allows the cabbage to be stored for a long time.
PLANTS:
White cabbage is mainly planted as an autumn crop or storage cabbage. For early plantings or summer crops, pointed cabbage is usually planted. There are specific varieties for each growing method and planting period. With Allégrow you can be sure that you are planting the right variety at the right time
GROWING TIPS:
White cabbages need to build up a lot of leaf mass while growing and are in the field for a long time. They therefore (like all other cabbage varieties) have high soil requirements. A very humus-rich, moisture-rich and lime-rich soil with a good structure is ideal.
-For early crops, light soil is most suitable; however, the cabbages will be less firm.
-Heavy soils are most suitable for autumn cultivation. Cultivation will be a little slower, but you can harvest large cabbages, which can also be stored for a long time.
-Before starting your crop, make sure you have a good base fertilizer and plenty of lime.
-Plant your cabbage plants in full sun and give them plenty of space: planting distance 60 x 60 cm.
-When planting, press the soil around the cabbage plants well and water immediately.
-Halfway through the cultivation, from cabbage formation onwards, it is best to apply some additional fertilizer.
-Make sure you harvest the cabbage in time, before it starts to burst open.
-Although white cabbages, unlike red cabbages, can tolerate a few degrees of frost, it is best to harvest the storage cabbages before the first frost, otherwise internal browning will occur during storage.
-Store your cabbages in a cool, but mostly airy area. Be careful not to bump or hurt them in your handling, this will cause spoilage.
CULINARY:
White cabbage is a traditional winter vegetable, it used to be grown mainly because it can be stored for a long time. White cabbage can also be prepared in various ways. The most famous use is undoubtedly 'sauerkraut', but it can also be eaten raw, e.g. finely grated in cold vegetable dishes.White cabbage can also be prepared in milk sauce, in soup and even fried. If you do not use the cabbage all at once, you can cut off only the outer leaves and store the rest (for a while)
PROBLEMS AND DISEASES:
Tuberous foot: irregular swelling at the roots that prevents the plant from absorbing nutrients. Cause is insufficient fruit rotation or too wet soil. To prevent infestation, it is necessary to strive for a good fruit rotation (1/4 year).
Cabbage fly: lays eggs at the base and the larvae attack the main root. Prevent this by placing a cloth over the plants.
