Product information "Radicchio rosso/red lettuce - set of 5 pieces"
Radicchio (or red-leaf) is a typical autumn vegetable, related to chicory and sugarloaf (green leaf). They all belong to the family Cichorium intybus. The cultivation is in Italy mainly in the Veneto region, between Venice,Verona and Treviso.
CULTIVATION TIPS:
Radicchio can be grown well on almost any soil type and requires a rather poor soil. Radicchio needs the sun for its beautiful red color. Planting distance:35 x 35 cm.Do not plant the press pots too deep, put them on the ground with about ½ of the root ball under the soil. This way you reduce the contact with the soil and the chance of fungal infections is reduced. You will rarely have a uniform crop with the cultivation of radicchio. Not all plants will turn heads or red at the same time. So you're left with a relatively long harvesting process.Allégrow's radicchio plants are grown in a heated and lighted greenhouse, necessary to prevent overshooting. This susceptibility to bolting is ample when planting early in the spring (cold bolting) and in full summer (hot bolting). When the plant temperature rises above 25°, growth stops and an uneven growth of the radicchio plant is ideal for overshooting. Watch out for night frost: cover up if necessary. You can leave radicchio in the field until late autumn.
CULINARY:
Radicchio is decorative and flavorful in lettuce dishes. Again, the somewhat bitter taste typical of plants of the genus Cichorium is present.
HARVEST AND STORAGE:
Radicchio shows faster wear at harvest-ripening stage and is best harvested before frost.
