Red Winter spring onions are planted in September–October and can be harvested in June–July. 🧅
The recommended minimum planting distance is 10 cm within the rows and 30 cm between the rows. This red spring onion has a slightly spicy flavour, matures moderately early, produces a good yield and has a long shelf life. This spring onion is supplied in a net bag.
Growing tips
Onions prefer to grow in the sun, in a warm spot. They will also grow in almost any type of soil with a good structure, but prefer fertile, loose, humus-rich soil that retains moisture yet is sufficiently well-drained.
If the soil is well maintained, there is no real need to fertilise. However, if you do decide to apply some fertiliser, avoid using nitrogen-rich fertilisers (such as farmyard manure) to minimise the risk of diseases such as crown rot or mould. It is better to use a potassium-rich fertiliser.
Once the onion tops have fallen over, the onions are ready to be harvested. Leave them to dry until the tops are completely dry. You can then remove the tops and store the onions in containers in a well-ventilated, dry place. It is also possible to store them in the form of an onion plait. To do this, we plait the onion tops together with a piece of string. We then hang the plait in a well-ventilated, dry place.
The onion fly is pretty much the only potential problem. It’s worth noting that if you plant onions and carrots side by side, you’ll find you have fewer problems with both carrot and onion flies. They also make good neighbours for root vegetables, beetroot, lettuce and tomatoes. Peas and beans, on the other hand, should be avoided as neighbours.
