Product information "Blood sorrel - pot ø13 cm (Rumex sanquineus)"

Blood sorrel is a useful and highly decorative addition to your herb garden.

Originally from the Mediterranean area, this herb is also found in the wild in the Low Countries. It is an easy-to-grow hardy plant that can grow 60 to 120cm tall and has arrow-shaped leaves with bright red veins.

CULTIVATION TIPS:
Sorrel requires an acidic moist soil, in full sun or partial shade. Planting distance 30 cm.
Blood sorrel is a naturally deep-rooting perennial. If you let the plant bloom and set seed, the resulting seedlings are often difficult to get rid of and they can become a real plague in your garden. Solve this problem by spreading enough lime or better yet, treat sorrel as an annual. Therefore, pick all the flowers in time so that they can't form seeds and so that the plant can put its energy into growing new leaves. After all, fresh, young leaves have the best flavor. In long warm periods, however, the taste of sorrel may become more bitter.

CULINARY:
Blood sorrel has a fresh-sour flavor and is high in vitamin C.

Fresh young leaves can be incorporated into mixed salads. The larger older leaves can be incorporated into stews, soups and sauces. Sorrel can also be cooked, like spinach, or used in a clear broth. The first leaves in spring are the tastiest, these are less sour and tender.

Caution: Because sorrel contains oxalic acid, use is not recommended for rheumatoid arthritis patients and individuals with kidney and stomach acid problems.

MEDICINAL:
Sorrel has a blood purifying, thirst quenching and laxative effect.
