Chinese bieslook
Product information "Chinese chives, diced garlic - pot ø13 cm (Allium tuberosum)"
The Chinese chive (Allium Tuberosum), like the onion, leek and garlic, belongs to the garlic family (Alliaceae).
Chinese chives have been used in Asian cuisine for centuries. The leaves are coarser and broader than the common chive. Because of its garlicky taste it is also called garlic chives, with the advantage that you do not smell it after eating. The plant blooms in summer with white flowers.
TEELTTIPS:
Chinese chives are easy to grow and can be planted in either full sun or a shady spot. Provide a chalky, well-fertilized, moist soil. Preferably use long-acting organic fertilizer and always give enough water. Planting distance: 20 cm. Chinese chives can also be easily soaked in a flowerpot on the windowsill or balcony. Harvest the young leaves at will by cutting them off just above the ground with scissors.
CULINARY:
Chinese chives are usually used finely chopped in numerous Asian dishes. If you like this chive-garlic flavor, Chinese chives can be used like regular chives, as a flavoring in sauces, soups and salads
Unlike regular chives, Chinese chives may be cooked along in hot dishes. Finely chopped fresh Chinese chives can be frozen well, retaining flavor. Use only the young thin stems, thicker stems can sometimes become tough. The flowers are also edible and can be used as a garnish for dishes.
MEDICINAL:
Chinese chives promote appetite and digestion and are used in Chinese cooking for their diuretic effects.
