Step-by-step plan to grow asparagus yourself 👇👇How to

grow?
Growing asparagus is a multi-year job but from the third year, you can enjoy delicious asparagus for up to 10 to 15 years! These asparagus roots are already two years old so you can enjoy asparagus the very next year!

When to plant?
The best time to plant asparagus is from March through April.

How to plant
Give
the asparagus a sunny spot in well-drained soil (asparagus prefers more sandy soil). Do not plant them in clay soil or in moist soil. Preferably pick a spot in the vegetable garden where no root vegetables have stood in previous years.

Dig a trench 70 cm wide. For white violet asparagus make sure the planting depth is 25 cm and for green asparagus dig a trench 15 cm deep. Leave 1.5 to 2 m between each trench, and keep 30 cm between the asparagus plants so they have enough room to grow. Add some mature compost to the soil as fertilizer.

Are you suffering from clay soil?

Then
addsome sand to lighten the soil.
Place the heart of the root at a depth of 15 to 20 cm. Make sure you place the roots with the growing points in the longitudinal direction of the beds. This is important because they will sprout in that direction too! After planting, put some soil back into the trench so you can't see the asparagus anymore but be careful not to damage the roots. Also take a moment to measure the pH level of the soil. A value of 6.8-7 is ideal and will provide whiter and more beautiful asparagus with a better taste! During the winter, sprinkle also yearly seaweed calcium (± 300-400 gr/m²).

When to harvest?

Growing asparagus is a long-term job, but it's worth it! From the third year onwards you can start harvesting in abundance and for 10 to 15 years you will be able to enjoy tasty home-grown asparagus every spring (April/June)! The yield increases in the first years up to 400 grams per plant. With our asparagus cutter, harvesting becomes even easier!
