Actinidia arguta 'Issai' - pot - 50-60 cm
Kiwi
Product information "Actinidia arguta 'Issai' - pot - 50-60 cm"
The kiwi berry is a self-pollinating cultivar. The healthy, tasty, green fruit is eaten with the skin on.
CULTIVATION TIPS:
The kiwi grape prefers a sheltered place in the sun on a normal, well-drained, humus-rich soil. The roots burn quickly with and excess fertilizer, therefore it is better to give a small dose of fertilizer monthly. The plant flowers in May-June, fruits can be harvested from mid-September into October.
The Issai (grows more compact) can be grown using a T-bar system, along a pergola, against a wire or even in a pot.
Pruning is done in January.
1st year: firmly attach the original trunk, leaving 1 new strong-growing shoot to form a new trunk.
2nd year: divide the long shoots radially over the support structure.
3rd year: 4 long shoots are tied together and shortened to 1m.
Next years we do each time rejuvenation pruning: we keep a few 1-year old twigs from branches of the previous year to guarantee the fruit setting. Twigs originating from older branches do not bear fruit the following year.
ADVICE FOR PROBLEMS:
The kiwi grape is generally little susceptible to diseases and pests. Young plants can be damaged by insects, snails and mice. Usually the plant is strong enough and is not affected, possibly a small growth retardation can occur
Cats can also cause some damage, they are attracted to certain substances in the plant, rub against it and so sometimes branches break off. In that case we can protect the young stems with some chicken wire.
