Product information "Vitis 'Vroege van der Laan' - pot - 50-60 cm"

Vitis 'Early van der Laan' is an older but popular grape variety. It likes a place in the sun.

GROWING TIPS:
Grapes like a place in the sun, and a south or east wall is ideal for growing grapes along.

The plants like a fertile, humus-rich, preferably water-retaining soil. For planting we make a spacious planting hole, we mix in decomposed farmyard manure or compost, it is best to keep a distance of 30 cm from the wall or greenhouse wall, 1 plant per 2 running meters.

When planting, we must make sure that the grafting site is not under the ground.

Pruning each year is necessary for a good harvest:

Winter pruning (January-February)

The first years we prune
the plantto obtain a good shape
:The first year we prune the plant back to 3-4 eyes, creating 3 to 4 tendrils (these become the stems) which we tie to form an espalier. The
following years we prune the side tendrils of the stems to a few eyes. The extension of the stems is pruned to 60 cm (to obtain sufficient side shoots), stopping when the desired height is reached.
Even after the grapevine has acquired its final shape, annual pruning is still necessary. We prune the plant from bottom to top, limiting each side shoot to 2 to 4 eyes. Old, badly positioned, diseased and dead branches are pruned away.

Summer pruning

We prune all the tendrils to 2 leaves beyond the cluster. If there are several clusters per tendril, we keep only one. New shoots that arise as a result are pruned back to 1 leaf. Tendrils without a cluster are pruned back to 40 cm.
Summer pruning should be repeated regularly.

ADVICE ON PROBLEMS:
The most common fungal diseases in grapes are powdery mildew and downy mildew, but the Muscat Blue variety has good resistance to these.

In September (during ripening), damage by birds and wasps can occur to the ripe grapes, we can possibly use a bird net to reduce damage by birds. Even better is a hail net, it limits damage by birds and by wasps.
