Product information "Ribes rubrum 'Jonkheer van Tets' - pot - bush"
Red berries have a sour taste, and a bright red color.
CULTIVATION TIPS:
The huckleberry is a self-pollinator, so in principle we only need 1 plant to harvest berries, it prefers a sunny position (half-shadow is also possible) and a soil with a good water balance. The plant flowers in April-May, the berries can be harvested from late June to early August. From a mature plant we can easily harvest 3 to 5 kg of berries.
The advantage of a hedge is that the plants are more compact, making pruning and harvesting easier.
We prune the plants once or twice a year. Pruning in winter is necessary. If we grow the plants as a straight hedge, we also prune in summer (late May, early June).
The maintenance pruning is done in winter (between December and mid April):
- we cut back branches that are too low -
badly directed branches (branches that grow inwards or cross each other) are removed -
rejuvenate (cut back old stem branches to a young shoot)
- remove the ground shoots (unless we use one to replace an old stem branch)
- shorten the longest branches to 1m20 If
the plant is grown as an espalier/straight hedge, we cut back all branches longer than 15 cm to 0.5 to 2 cm.
Summer pruning (only when cultivated as an espalier) provides better lighting, a more airy plant and makes picking easier. We pinch out a few of the shoot tips along the sides of our hedge, making sure that at least 5-6 leaves remain on the pruned shoot.
ADVICE FOR PROBLEMS:
Birds can do a lot of damage to our berries, so it is best to use a bird net.
When potassium is deficient, the plants are susceptible to edge disease (in which the leaf margins die)
