Product information "Oregano, wild marjoram, eel herb - 9x9 cm pot (Origanum vulgare)"

Oregano (origanum vulgare) is also called wild marjoram. It originates from the countries around the Mediterranean Sea. In Italy and Greece it can be found frequently in the wild, also in our country the plant can be found sporadically beside roads. It is a hardy, evergreen, herbaceous plant that grows up to 50 cm high. The plant grows in a dense crop and has oval, true-edge, dark green leaves. Oregano flowers from July to September with white or pink flowers.Oregano is often confused with marjoram, however there are some clear differences:- Oregano is perennial, marjoram is annual- Oregano has larger leaves on a stalk and is more vigorous- Oregano is also spicier in taste

TEELTTPS:
By nature, oregano likes a rocky environment. It therefore prefers a spot in full sun, possibly with some shade in the afternoon. The soil should be well drained and lime rich, some rock rubble may even be added. Especially in wet winters this will be an advantage because too much moisture can be detrimental to the plants. Unlike most other herbs, oregano has a stronger taste when you add extra nutrition, preferably organic fertilizer. You can always cut fresh leaves as needed. In winter the plant dies down to sprout again in spring. Oregano can also be grown in pots, but make sure the pot is large enough and there is good drainage. The plant also does well in rock gardens.

CULINARY:
Oregano is a widely used herb in Italian and Greek cuisine. It is a typical seasoning in pizzas. Its flavor also comes out well when combined with tomatoes, zucchini, potatoes and peppers. In addition, use it with lamb, pasta dishes and southern stews and marinades. It can also be added finely chopped to salads or butter sauces. It is best to add oregano fresh to your dishes, do not let it cook with you. Taste promptly, the flavor can be strongly overpowering.Oregano can be dried well, retaining its flavor. For example, it is a regular ingredient in various spice mixtures, such as the well-known "provencal herbs" and various pizza and pasta spice mixtures.

MEDICINAL:
An infusion or tea of oregano leaves helps to relieve a cold. It has a detoxifying effect and soothes throat irritations.Essential oil extracted from oregano can be applied externally against infections or badly healing wounds. It also has an analgesic effect for muscle pain or rheumatic pains.
