Product information "Melon cavaillon - pressing block 10x10 cm - grafted plant - strong quality!"

Melon is an old cultivated crop in which a lot of breeding has taken place over time. This has resulted in a great variety and it is not easy to classify the varieties according to type. In the Netherlands the melon was already cultivated under flat glass around 1900, but after 1940 standing glass (greenhouses) was increasingly used. Cultivation takes place in the flat field or on ropes. Bees or bumblebees are needed for pollination.

CULTIVATION TIPS:
Melons grow best in a greenhouse or possibly a plastic tunnel. Planting distance: 75 x 100
.The male flowers are in the axils against the main shoot, the female on the side tendrils. Insects provide pollination or you manually apply some pollen from the male flowers to the pistil of the female.
You top the side shoots at 3 to 4 leaves.

Attention: heavy fruits can use quite a bit of support. You can literally smell it when the melons are ripe.

Do not fertilize too heavily, preferably some supplemental fertilizer just before flowering. Melons feel better in a light soil than in a heavy one.

PROBLEMS AND DISEASES:
Melon plants, like cucumber plants, are very sensitive to cold. The ideal time to plant is from 15 May. Watering with cold water is to be avoided.

If the soil temperature is too low, you will soon encounter root problems (pythium). Note: Even in hobby greenhouses, you need to keep an eye on the soil temperature!
