Product information "Stem onion/spring onion/pipe onion - set of 5 pieces"
Stem onion (or spring onion, or pipe onion) is an onion of which both the leaf and the onion are eaten young and fresh. Compared to normal onions, the leaves are also firmer and extra spicy in flavor.
PLANTING:
Plant onions and carrots next to each other (better yet: a row of onions next to a row of carrots, etc.): you will have much less trouble with onion flies on the one hand and carrot flies on the other. These flies don't like each other very much and drive each other away.
CULTIVATION TIPS:
Onions do not have high demands on the soil they are to grow in, as long as it has a good structure. Keep in mind that onions do not like soggy soils, or in other words, they require a lot of water but a field where the water remains in puddles is not an onion field.
If you want to improve the structure of the soil, you can underplant farmyard manure with straw in the autumn. Keep the fertilizer dosage sober: a little patent potassium for bulb formation is usually enough. Too much nitrogen promotes leaf formation at the expense of the bulb. For a healthy onion crop, crop rotation is very important. Keep in mind that leeks and garlic belong to the same family. Regularly removing weeds is important but do this very carefully because the onion has a fairly superficial root system. Also try not to crush any leaves: the smell attracts the onion fly.
HARVEST AND STORAGE:
Spring onions are usually used fresh in salads and soups. Whole spring onions will keep for another week in the refrigerator. We can also harvest only the leaves - for example, cut off the foliage at 10 cm above the ground. The onions then continue to grow and can be harvested again.
