Sowing instructions: mid April to August outdoors on rows or in flower pots. Do not sow too densely, otherwise thin out slightly.

Dill (Anethum graveolens) is an ancient herbal plant. Originally it comes from the Middle East and southern Europe. This kitchen herb used to be known for its medicinal properties by the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. People made use of both the leaves and the seeds. Dill was probably spread to the rest of Europe by monks. During the Middle Ages, dill was used in the fight against witches. The herb has made itself indispensable in the kitchen.

In Scandinavian countries, dill is widely used in dishes, especially in fish dishes. The name Dill comes from the Old Saxon word Dilarm, which loosely translated means "to rock to sleep. Dill belongs to the umbelliferous family which also includes carrots, celery and parsley. The plant has a hollow, shiny stem on which the leaves are pinnate, brittle and thread-like; the greenish-yellow umbelliferous flowers are much loved by florists and shine in many floral arrangements. Dill is also found in the wild where it easily becomes naturalized. Dill is healing for excess intestinal gas, is cough suppressant and rich in vitamin C. Using the seeds as a tea promotes a good night's sleep. This herb also works well with breastfeeding.

Want to sow dill?

Dill prefers a sunny spot and grows best in moist, well-drained and humus-rich soil. It can also be grown in pots or containers, provided sufficient water and food are available. Sowing is best done directly in situ because dill is difficult to transplant due to its pinyon-like root system. An ideal period for this is April-May, and should be done at a distance of 30cm. After two weeks, the seeds begin to germinate. Thinning out at 20cm gives hefty, sturdy plants. Dill is little susceptible to insects. It even protects against aphids.
