Rye can be grown as a green manure crop, forage crop and/or for soil cover. Winter rye can be sown late and is not frost sensitive. The crop is very suitable as a green manure crop after crops that are late. It gives a fairly quick and good soil cover and a very good rooting of the arable soil. Rye is mainly grown on sandy and valley soils (both as a grain and green manure crop) but also does well on sandy and clay soils. Fields that are wet and susceptible to rut are less suitable for rye cultivation. Winter rye is also used for fixing the soil on land that is prone to shifts in the soil, such as in the Veenkoloniën. Per 100 m2 1.5 kg is needed.
