How to grow herbs: step by step
1️⃣ Choose the right spot
- 🌞 Outdoors: Most herbs like a sunny spot with at least 6 hours of sunlight a day. Ideal for basil, rosemary and thyme
- 🏡 Indoors: Use a windowsill with plenty of light or a grow light for herbs like mint, chives and parsley. Enough sunlight is indispensable for the delicious smell and taste of herbs.
2️⃣ Sow at the right time
- 🌱 Indoor growing: You can sow herbs indoors all year round.
- 🌿 Grow outside: Most herbs can be sown from March-April, as soon as it's definitely not freezing anymore.
3️⃣ Choose the right soil & pots
- Use airy, nutritious potting soil for herbs or sowing and cutting soil.
- Make sure there is good drainage - choose pots with holes at the bottom or work with hydro pellets. Don't plant the herbs too close together. They might crowd each other out.
4️⃣ Water & care
- 💧 Water regularly, but avoid leaving the roots in the water.
- ✂️ Trim herbs regularly - This encourages new growth and prevents the plants from flowering.
5️⃣ Harvesting & storage
- 🌿 Pick leaves or twigs as needed - the more you harvest, the fuller the plant grows!
- 🍃 Dry or freeze: Harvest a larger quantity and dry the herbs or freeze them for later use.

Tip from Marcel
Do you often suffer from aphids in your vegetable or ornamental garden? Then herbal seeds can provide relief. Indeed, aphids do not like herbs with strong odours such as thyme, mint or basil.
