The real farmer's sorrel

Sorrel is the ideal basis for a warming, wintery oven dish or a hearty mashed potato, but the real farmer's sorrel is hard to find. You might recognise it from the turmeric patatoes with beef slices that were often served by grandmothers. The farmer's sorrel is much stronger than the common sorrel because it has been pruned and not sown. It is also darker green than the common sorrel. February/March is the ideal time to plant it. Is there still frost on the way? No problem, the sorrel can withstand a little frost. The leaves will turn a little brown, but once the frost has passed, the plants will quickly emerge again.

Burdock is a perennial plant, so once you have it in the garden, you can keep harvesting it. It is not a difficult plant to grow, but there are two things to keep in mind:

  • Do not place sorrel in the full sun
  • Sorrel requires a heavier soil, so it is better to plant it in the full ground and not in a (flower) tub
