watering the vegetable garden with a green watering can

3x handy water savers

Summers are getting warmer but also drier. It is therefore wise to adapt our gardens to the changing climate. You can do this by choosing drought-resistant plants & grasses, but also by using some handy aids that retain the available moisture better. Do you need handy watering tools in the garden? Then take a look here!

Save up to 50% water

Ornamental plants & herbs in pots require more care than in full soil. They dry out more quickly during hot summer days, but you can also 'drown' them more quickly if you are too enthusiastic with the watering can.

Hydro pellets

It is therefore advisable to apply a layer of hydro grains to flower pots & vegetable boxes before adding potting soil. These grains are made of clay, and are therefore a natural product. They are baked and absorb the excess water in the pots to release it again when the plant needs it. The pores in the grains also ensure good air circulation. The hydro grains can be washed and dried after use and then reused in another pot.

Watergel crystals

Water gel crystals have a similar function but can store much more water & nutrition than hydro grains, as much as 100 times their own weight. This allows you to reduce watering times by up to 50%. These water gel crystals can be added to flower boxes but also do fine in sandy soil. You only need to mix them in with some potting soil when laying out the garden. The water gel crystals will make your plants stronger and you will be able to enjoy the blooms longer because of the good water balance.

Terracottem

The star product in this list is surely Terracottem. This soil improver stores the water and nutrients present for no less than eight years. But in contrast to the above, it also provides the necessary fertiliser and stimulates soil life during the first growing season. Terracottem not only stores the available water & nutrition, but also provides something extra to the plant. Because of this, you hardly have to look after the plant during the first growing season, and you also save time and money on fertilizing. These advantages mean that Terracottem comes with a higher price tag, but it is certainly worth it. You can mix the Terracottem with potting soil when sowing or laying out the garden. Is your garden already planted? Then you can also mix the soil improver under the soil. The best thing, of course, is to work it completely into the soil so that it can store the water present in the soil as much as possible.

Terracottem Turf

For the lawn, a modified version, Terracottem Turf, was also released. You add this when sowing the lawn or placing the sod. This soil improver is made 100% of volcanic rock, and provides a good germination environment for the grass seed. As a result, the roots & grass plants will grow better & become stronger. It also makes the lawn more resistant to drought stress and disease.

Sunprotect

Also Sunprotect consists of water-saving polymers but distinguishes itself from the above products by its organic material. This product provides nutrition to the plants but also contains a root stimulator (humifirst). This makes the roots grow towards the water gel crystals so that they can absorb the water better. This product is active in the soil for up to 10 years, after which it slowly breaks down.
