Winter garlic in the autumn kitchen garden
Winter planting garlic is an absolute must. The yield is actually much higher when planted in autumn than in spring. Use plant garlic that you buy in a specialist garden centre, not garlic cloves from the supermarket! They are not the same. Each clove you plant will grow a new bulb of garlic that you can harvest at the end of June.
How do you plant winter garlic?
🧄 Garlic requires a light and humus-rich soil. It also prefers being in the sun. Plant the winter garlic 5 cm deep in the ground, with the pointed side facing upwards and the roots downwards.
🧄 Leave 10 to 15 cm distance between each clove, and make sure there is 30 cm distance between the plant rows. You can also apply a potassium-rich fertiliser after planting the garlic for an extra boost of growth. Garlic can tolerate some cold but during severe frosts it is best to cover it up with a fleece. By the end of June you will be able to enjoy the first garlic bulbs. Do not wait too long to harvest as the new cloves will start to sprout.
🧄 After harvesting, leave both the winter garlic and the winter onions in the kitchen garden for a day. Then you can hang them up in the house or lay them down in a dry place to dry further. Would you rather have an eye-catcher in your kitchen? Then make a spectacular braid with the garlic bulbs.
