Are you suffering from blood lice in your chicken coop or aviary? Blood mites or blood lice are always around; they are inherent in poultry. But in recent years, thanks to hot summers, they have grown so explosively that they often become a real pest in chicken coops. Take preventive action early in the spring to avoid infestations!

Like chickens, reptiles can also suffer from blood mites. Consider snakes, bearded dragons, monitor lizards, iguanas and lizards. A blood mite can easily survive for six months in a terrarium. Heat can increase the population of blood mites very quickly.

What is Chickenheppie?
Chickenheppie is a tube filled with moist peat-like material containing predatory mites Stratiolaelaps scimitus.

They are beige in color and only 1 mm in size. This natural enemy actively searches for blood lice, chicken mites and black lice in poultry and rodent animal enclosures to then suck them dry. On average, a predatory mite eats 5 blood lice per day.

The predatory mite is effective between 15°C and 28°C. Above 28°C the predatory mites are no longer active so avoid putting Chickenheppie out during a heat wave. The predatory mites also do not survive periods of frost.

How to use Chickenheppie?
Distribute the tube by spreading it in small heaps in the animal house and nest. Scatter the piles on the sides of the animal house.
Do not scatter predatory mites on the animals. Blood lice only sit on the animals at night and will hide in the cracks of the coop during the day.
It is normal to see more blood lice in the days following the introduction of Chickenheppie. After all, the predatory mites chase the blood mites out of the cracks of the cage.
Regularly moistening the animal enclosures helps the breeding of predatory mites to develop well. You can easily do this with a plant nebulizer.
After 2 to 3 weeks you should notice an improvement. If this is not the case, it means that the blood lice were present in too large numbers in relation to the predatory mites you released. Repetition of the application is then recommended.
When to use Chickenheppie?
The best moment to start with Chickenheppie is the moment the blood lice come out of their hibernation and the eggs laid before the winter hatch. The eggs of the blood lice begin to hatch from 12°C. You can't see the blood mites yet but they are there. By releasing predatory mites from 15°C, you can nip the blood mites in the bud.
If you do not work preventively, keep a close eye on the blood lice population and use a blood lice trap. As soon as you detect blood lice, you must put Chickenheppie out curatively. So no longer work with the small quantity of 2,500 predatory mites but effectively choose a tube of 10 m2 or 25 m2, depending on the size of your loft.
How much Chickenheppie do I need?
We have four quantities: 2,500 predatory mites, 10,000 predatory mites, 25,000 predatory mites and 125,000 predatory mites.

Preventative
2,500 predatory mites are only used preventatively! Introducing a bag of 2,500 predatory mites every three weeks in spring is a good regime for chicken houses smaller than 10 m2 (including all walls, ceiling and floor). If you do not want to release predatory mites as often, choose an early release of Chickenheppie 10 m2. Even in animal houses larger than 10 m2, use tubes of 10 m2 immediately as a preventive treatment.

Do you already have blood lice?
In that case, you must take curative action. Use tubes of 10 m2, 25 m2 or 125m2 depending on the area of your animal house.

Beware: You have to count all side walls and ceiling as the surface area to be treated because there are blood lice everywhere. The package of 10m² is for a cage with a ground surface of about 1 to 2m² depending on the height of your side walls.

Do you have an infestation of blood lice?
In that case, combine the different products. Start by patching your coop with diatomaceous earth. After several treatments with diatomaceous earth clean your coop with water. Then put out a double dose of Chickenheppie. After two weeks you repeat with a normal dose of Chickenheppie in proportion to your loft.

Can I store predatory mites against blood lice?
ChickenHeppie are live predatory mites that you need to release in the animal house as soon as possible after receiving them. The material can be stored for several days in a damp room at 12 to 15°C (cellar). However, since the material can dry out very quickly, the cardboard tubes must remain moist. Therefore, roll them in a damp towel. Never put the tube in the refrigerator, it is too cold!

Spraying in combination with predatory mites against blood lice?
Do not use chemicals in combination with predatory mites! If you have used something chemical beforehand, contact us to find out how long the product is harmful to the predatory mites.

Diatomaceous earth and similar silica-based products can be used beforehand but not simultaneously with predatory mites.
