Product information "Debaere purple asparagus roots annual 'Rosalie' - set of 10 plants"

  • Set of 10 asparagus roots
  • Suitable for growing green & purple asparagus
  • Annual
  • Lightly sweet & fruity flavor, with a hint of bitterness
  • Ideal for steaming, boiling, stewing and baking

These Rosalie asparagus roots have a purple color but can be grown as green asparagus.
Do you grow them just like white asparagus (protected from light)? Then they get a nice pink blush.
This variety produces large soft shoots (Ø 22-24 mm) with a nice closed tip.

With these fresh asparagus you conjure up lots of fresh spring dishes on the table! They have a slightly sweet and fruity taste with a hint of bitterness. You can steam them (for a delicious pure taste), bake or boil them. While cooking, the asparagus turns green.

Growing asparagus is a multi-year job but from the third year, you can enjoy delicious asparagus for 10 to 15 years! These asparagus roots are already one year old.

How to grow?
Growing asparagus is a multi-year job but from the third year on, you can enjoy delicious asparagus for 10 to 15 years! These asparagus roots are one year old so you can enjoy fresh asparagus within 2 years!

When to plant?
The best time to plant asparagus is from March through April.

How to plant
Give the asparagus a sunny spot in well-drained soil (asparagus prefers more sandy soil). Certainly do not plant them in clay soil or in moist soil. Preferably pick a spot in the vegetable garden where there have been no root vegetables in previous years.

Dig a trench 70 cm wide. For white purple asparagus, ensure a planting depth of 25 cm and for green asparagus dig a trench 15 cm deep. Leave 1.5 to 2 m distance between each trench, and keep 30 cm distance between the asparagus plants so they have enough room to grow. Add some mature compost to the soil as fertilizer.

Do you suffer from clay soil?
Then add some sand to lighten the soil.
Place the center of the root at a depth of 15 to 20 cm. Make sure you place the roots with the growing points in the longitudinal direction of the beds. This is important because they will also sprout in that direction! After planting, put some soil back into the trench so you can't see the asparagus but be careful so you don't damage the roots. Also measure the pH level of the soil. A value of 6.8-7 is ideal and will make for whiter and more beautiful asparagus, with a better taste! During winter, also sprinkle seaweed lime (± 300-400 gr/m²) annually.

When to harvest?

Growing asparagus takes several years, but it's worth it! From the third year you can start harvesting and you can enjoy tasty homegrown asparagus every spring (April/June) for 10 to 15 years! The yield increases to 400 gr per plant in the first years. With our asparagus picker, harvesting becomes even easier!
