How to lay pond liner
1. Determine the shape
Determine the location and shape of the pond and mark the perimeter. You can do this with stakes and a garden hose for example, at this stage you can still make corrections.
2. Excavation
Establish the final markings with perpendicular spade marks. Dig out the earth layer by layer. Cover the marsh and/or low water zones later with a layer of 10cm of gravel or pond substrate.
3. Apply underlayment
At this step it is important to remove all sharp objects and roots from the soil. Apply a layer of sand above the layer on which you want to lay the liner. It is recommended to use material that is robust and uses non-rotting synthetic material.
4. Apply liner
Spread the pond liner over the pond hole. The liner should keep an overlap of about 30-50cm around the hole, the liner will gradually adjust its shape itself as water enters the newly created pond. Because of this, it is important that you do not lay the liner flat at the edge and cover it with soil but to incorporate it with a capillary seal.
5. Finishing the bank
Congratulations on the construction of your new pond! Finish the edge with vegetation mats or vegetation bags, place plants in them, and once the plants have rooted for some time, the foil edges will no longer be visible and will look neater.
